Google’s Bard gets a big upgrade with Gemini
Today, Google Bard will receive an upgrade that, according to the firm, will greatly expand its capabilities. The company’s generative AI chatbot, Google Bard, is intended to compete with ChatGPT.
According to the firm, Bard will now be driven by Gemini, the most recent and sophisticated AI model from Google, providing the chatbot with enhanced understanding, planning, reasoning, and other skills.
Gemini may operate on a variety of devices, including data centers and mobile phones. It is available in three sizes: Ultra, Pro, and Nano.
There will be two stages to the Gemini release for Bard. Bard will first receive an upgrade from a specially calibrated version of Gemini Pro. Google is set to launch Bard Advanced next year, allowing customers to access the greatest AI model—Gemini Ultra, to start.
More than 170 nations and territories around the world will soon offer the Bard with Gemini Pro version in English, with other languages and countries—including the EU and the U.K.—to follow shortly after.

Gemini Pro was put through a battery of industry-standard benchmarks before its public release, and according to Google, it beat GPT-3.5 in six of the eight benchmarks. Better results on the massive multitask language understanding tasks (MMLU) are among the benchmarks for evaluating huge AI models. Additionally, it fared better on the GSM8K, a test of elementary school math reasoning. But as Kyle Wiggers of TechCrunch noted, GPT-3.5 has been around for more than a year, so this release feels more like a catch-up than an improvement.
According to the company, the enhancements will enable Bard to perform better in areas such as comprehension and summary of material, logic, ideation, composition, and organization.
In a press briefing, Sissie Hsiao, Google’s VP and GM of Assistant and Bard, stated, “This is the biggest single quality improvement of Bard since we’ve launched.”

According to Hsiao, Gemini Pro will initially power text-based prompts in Bard. However, in the upcoming months, it will be extended to multimodal help, which refers to texts and visuals or other modalities.
Bard Advanced, a brand-new experience driven by Gemini’s most capable model, will make its appearance in 2024. The AI, known as Gemini Ultra, possesses multimodal thinking abilities and can comprehend and respond to a variety of input formats, including text, graphics, audio, video, and code.
In addition to comprehending audio and video content, Google claims that Gemini Ultra can also grasp, explain, and produce high-quality code in several popular programming languages. In that scenario, it appears that this upgrade is the one to hold out for.
According to the company, Bard Advanced will first be made available to a select group of customers in early 2019 before being made more widely available to everyone. Before Bard Advanced is released, Google will also do extra security audits.
The update comes after Bard has undergone several significant enhancements since its launch barely eight months ago. The AI experience has been enhanced in recent months with capabilities like the capacity to respond to queries regarding YouTube videos and to interact with users’ Google apps, including Drive, Gmail, and Docs, in addition to other Google services like hotels and flights. Additionally, it can verify its responses to ascertain whether the AI is “hallucinating,” or responding in accordance with incorrect information.
With Gemini, we’re getting closer to providing you with the greatest AI collaborator available, according to Hsiao. Given that it acknowledges that Bard is still developing, that at least appears more sincere.
