The Lagos State Police Command has issued a wanted notice for Dr. Idara Bassey in relation to the death of a 36-year-old woman named Abiola, who died during a buttocks enlargement procedure at a clinic in Lekki Phase 1.
Police spokesperson Benjamin Hundeyin confirmed the development to our correspondent on Thursday. According to Swage News, the tragic incident occurred when Abiola visited the clinic for a Brazilian Butt Lift—a cosmetic surgery that involves extracting fat from other body areas and injecting it into the buttocks to enhance their appearance.
Reports indicate that during the procedure, a nurse (identity withheld), allegedly following Bassey’s instructions, administered an injection that led to Abiola’s sudden loss of consciousness and difficulty breathing. Despite cautions from medical experts about potential risks associated with the procedure, many women in Lagos have opted for the surgery, as evidenced by numerous online testimonials.
Abiola had left her home in Diamond Estate, Sangotedo, in the Ibeju Lekki area, instructing her driver to take her to the clinic on Monday. After the injection, she reportedly lost consciousness and began gasping for air. The driver later reported the incident to the police.
Hundeyin disclosed that while the nurse who administered the injection has been arrested, Dr. Bassey, the clinic’s owner, remains at large. “The clinic’s owner is on the run,” Hundeyin stated.
The police have classified Dr. Bassey as a suspect in the case. “She’s on the run. Of course, she’s a suspect,” Hundeyin added.
The case follows a similar tragic incident involving a 31-year-old British woman, Melissa Kerr, who died in 2019 at Medicana Kadikoy Hospital in Istanbul during a similar procedure. The British Broadcasting Corporation reported in 2023 that Kerr had not been adequately informed about the risks of the surgery prior to traveling for the procedure.
