The Joe Biden administration intends to sell four advanced drones which can be armed with the Hellfire missiles to Ukraine for their defense against Russian invaders.
The drones which is to be sent out to Ukraine is the MQ-1C Gray Eagle drone made by General Atomics. This drone is more sophisticated when compared to what is currently in use by Ukraine in terms of endurance and range. Reuters reported, citing three sources familiar with the planned sale.
The Gray Eagle drone can fly for more than 30 hours at a stretch and gather a huge amount of data for intelligence purposes.
The Gray Eagle drone doubles the weight of the current missiles that the current drone in use can accommodate at a time which Ukraine is using. Each of the Gray Eagle drone can also be equipped with up to eight 100 pound Hellfire missiles.
The war which started on February 24, has been a nightmare for the Ukrainians and they have been the underdogs in the fight as Russian forces keep invading, claiming damages, displacing people, and destroying lives and properties.
On this note the arrival of these drones in Ukraine will be of a major advantage for Ukraine as it could help them land a first major blow on Russia as a bold statement.
The Biden administration intends to notify congress on the potential sale of the drones in the coming days, with a public announcement to accompany it.
The administration has already set aside $40 billion Ukraine security assistance initiative to fund both the sale and subsequent training for the drone users.
Sources have said that it takes months to master and handle the Grey Eagle drones, and the best option will be to train experienced Ukrainian drone handlers which could be a training that will last for just a few weeks as this will fast-track results.
Once the training is complete the drones will be delivered to Ukraine for use accompanied with Hellfire missiles, the U.S official and one of the sources said.
