It is a black Sunday for the people of Ondo state and the nation as many persons have been feared dead today over the massacre at the St Francis Catholic Church, Owa-luwa Street, in Owo council area of Ondo State capital caused suspected bandits.
A member of the St Francis Catholic Church, Owa-luwa Street, in Owo council area of Ondo State, Kehinde Ogunkorode confirmed that the suspected gunmen attacked the church and killed no fewer than 50 worshippers.
A source explained that the congregation were taken by surprise saying the casualty might be more as some worshippers who were taken to the hospital have gave up.
According to him, “the church that was attacked was at the back of the palace and we are still wondering how gunmen could carry out such an attack at the central eye of the town. This is unbelievable. Kabiyesi would soon issue a statement on the incident.”
Meanwhile, a health worker on duty at the Federal Medical Centre, Owo, where the casualties were taken to said over 50 people had been taking to the hospital, saying some were dead already while some were still alive.
He said, “They are still bringing people to the hospital, some have been confirmed dead while some are still breathing. But for now I can’t specify the number of those that died.”
Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer, Mrs Funmilayo Odunlami, said the command was yet to ascertain the cause the incident.
Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu of Ondo State has However expressed sadness over the attack on St Francis Catholic Church, Owa-luwa in Owo, Owo Local Government Area of the state.
In a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, he said “It is a black Sunday in Owo. Our hearts are heavy. Our peace and tranquility have been attacked by the enemies of the people. This is a personal loss, an attack on our dear state.
I have spoken to the Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Ondo, Most Reverend Jude Arogundade, who is presently on his way to Owo. Similarly, I have had to cut short my party’s national assignment in Abuja and visit Owo immediately,” Governor Akeredolu said.
