The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and the government are at odds, and the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) leadership has urged President Muhammadu Buhari to personally mediate by scheduling a meeting with the parties involved in the State House Aso Villa, Abuja.
At the conclusion of the NANS national convention on Monday in Abuja, Comrade Usman Umar Barambu, the association’s president, lamented that the lecturers’ ongoing strikes had disrupted the academic schedule at public universities and had harmed the future of Nigerian students because a four-year program now lasts six or more years.
In order to end the ongoing labor conflict in the country’s university system, he pledged to work with both ASUU and the government.
“We call on President Muhammad Buhari GCFR to as a matter of urgency to use his fatherly intervention to resolve the lingering ASUU Strike by personally brokering a meeting with ASUU,” Barambu said.
Earlier, Comrade Usman Ayuba, Chairman of the Communiqué Drafting Committee, urged President Muhammadu Buhari to choose skilled individuals with the knowledge and ability to halt the rise of insecurity in the nation.
He urged the government to propose practical answers to the country’s ongoing conflicts between farmers and herders.
He said, “NANS also calls on President Muhammad Buhari GCFR to immediately sack the present non-performing service chiefs with a view towards overhauling and rejigging the entire security formation of the country by bringing on board capable and digital hand with experience and capacity to stem the tide of insecurity that is rearing ugly head in order to ensure the permanent debasement of insurgency so as to combat banditry and kidnapping in the country,” he said.

Ayuba urged the Federal Ministry of Education to prioritize the sector in order to satisfy the UNESCO norm and recommendation that developing nations devote 26% of their yearly budgets to education.
The Students stressed that they will expose anyone found guilty and demanded that academics engaging in the business of Sex for Marks cease from such criminal practices.
NANS applauded the significant number of students who participated in INEC’s recently concluded voter registration drive and registered across the nation.
Comrade Ayuba asked students to register as voters and choose trustworthy candidates in 2023.
