The Ikeja Special Offenses Court sentenced Chukwudimeme Onwuamadike, alias Evans, and his accomplice Victor Aduba on Monday to 21 years to life in jail for kidnapping a businessman named Sylvanus Ahamonou and extorting N$420,000 from his family as ransom.
The sentence was given to the group on Friday after Justice Hakeem Oshodi found them guilty on two charges of conspiracy and kidnapping of Donatus Duru, a businessman.
The victim is Maydon Pharmaceuticals Ltd.’s Managing Director.
Justice Oshodi concluded that the prosecution had successfully established the accusation against the trio beyond a reasonable doubt in order to convict them.
“He was seen freely laughing and willingly answered questions. A close look at his body shows no sign of torture. He did not look unkempt. He is seen laughing even when he was told that he must be a rich kidnapper,” Justice Oshodi said.
“He showed no remorse in the dock and tried to lie his way out of the crimes despite the video evidence.”
He came to the conclusion that the evidence presented in court, particularly their videotaped admissions, proved their guilt.

Due to insufficient evidence connecting Ogechi Uchechukwu and two former Nigerian Army soldiers, Chilaka Ifeanyi and Victor Aduba, to the crime, the court released and acquitted them.
Evans, together with Uche Amadi, Okwuchukwu Nwachukwu, Ogechi Uchechukwu, Chilaka Ifeanyi, and Victor Aduba, had been charged by the Lagos State government for allegedly kidnapping Donatus Dunu, the managing director of Maydon Pharmaceuticals Limited, on February 14, 2017.
The defendants were accused of committing the alleged crime between February 14 and April 12, 2017, according to the state.
Additionally, the prosecution had informed the court that the event happened on Obokun Street in the Ilupeju neighborhood of Lagos at around 7:45 p.m.
