Automotive manufacturer, Volkswagen Group, alongside its battery company, PowerCo have chosen Canada as the location for its first cell factory in North America.
Volkswagen also disclosed that from 2027, the cell plant which is located in St. Thomas, Ontario, will be able to produce enough battery cells, while PowerCo will be focused on activities like the sourcing of raw, the production of cell, and manufacturing at the cell factory which will be located in Canada.
With Volkswagen Group committed to cutting the cost of battery productions, the battery company has built factories in Spain and Germany and the new factory in Canada, will be the third.
Speaking on why Canada was chosen as the location for the new EV battery cell factory, Oliver Blume, the CEO of VW Group said “Our North American strategy is a key priority in our 10-point-plan that we’ve laid out last year.”
He also added that: “With the decisions for cell production in Canada and a Scout site in South Carolina, we’re fast-forwarding the execution of our North American strategy.”
