Google likely began realigning itself that day when it reached the uncomfortable revelation that it had been complacently spinning its wheels on a false AI for a decade. Additionally, based on an internal email obtained by Axios, it appears that Assistant itself is currently undergoing a generative face-lift.
The Assistant team leads “see a huge opportunity to explore what a supercharged Assistant, powered by the latest LLM [large language model] technology, would look like,” according to the email, which also outlines certain organizational changes to accomplish that.
Obviously, you don’t drastically alter a productive division only to experiment with different ideas. It seems more like they have already seen how it appears because other businesses have made public demonstrations of it, and they are rushing to catch up. In any case, the “vision” modification will take shape over the upcoming months.
Despite multiple examples of LLMs powering chatbots and assistants, the technology has yet to demonstrate that it is a useful advancement in this field of technology. Though not precisely what we name “AI,” services like Assistant, Alexa, and Siri were more like Mad Libs where users gave the subjects and verbs, such as “traffic+downtown+now” or “teriyaki+near+me,” and while it isn’t what we label “AI,” it can be very helpful as an interface for straightforward digital interactions.

Is it truly an improvement if the response to your question about how long it will take to drive to the beach is based entirely on Western literary works? The novelty wears off when you ask Alexa to tell you a joke, just like it does when you ask it to give you the weather in the style of a sonnet.
Although LLMs are fascinating and their capacity to follow a conversation can be helpful, it doesn’t seem that many people are interested in conversing with their navigation system or debating the relative advantages of farmed versus wild fish when they inquire about the best sushi restaurants.
It could be preferable to have a single interface that can handle both and rely upon its features as needed. Google is staking at the very least that it should organize its affairs just in case.
