The Chairman of Tricycle Owners and Riders Association of Nigeria (TORAN) Ogun State, Mr Abdulwaasi Agunbiade has commended the governor of the state, Prince Dapo Abiodun for his committed interest in entrenching good governance by embarking on projects that bear relevance to the needs and yearnings of the people.
Mr Abdulwaasi Agunbiade fondly called Yayi Agbara said it was not just enough for a governor to be embarking on projects but such projects should be seen to be providing answers to the people’s problems and ultimately make life easier for them.
Agunbiade made this revelation while speaking with Swage News on the government of Prince Dapo Abiodun and its impact on the transport sector in the last 16 months in office.
The TORAN Chairman said “there is no doubt that the governor has started very well with his decision to confront the challenges of our bad rural and access roads where our members largely operate. As operators of tricycles, we don’t ply the highway, we rely on these access roads for our daily bread and sincerely, these efforts of the government is making our business to be smooth sailing”.
The decision of Gov Abiodun to mobilise contractors back to some of the road projects left behind by the immediate past government of Sen Ibikunle Amosun is also very welcoming because I don’t know of any government in the past who had been this magnanimous. This of course, is a boost to the transportation sector”.
Agunbiade disclosed further that aside confronting the upscale challenges of bad roads in the state, Gov Abiodun has equally and silently continue his determination to reposition the state in the area of housing with the ongoing Prince Courts Estate at Kemta, Abeokuta, likewise the education sector with renovation and construction of over 500 block of classrooms while the health care had also received a boost with several interventions.
The TORAN Chairman explained further that “as a result of Prince Dapo Abiodun’s silent revolution in the road sector especially, as it concerns the access roads where most tricycles operate, our union Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) to the coffers of the government has increased by 30% and we hope to even do more. This is our own little way of supporting this government for placing so much priority in meeting with the yearnings of its people”.
Agunbiade went further to commend the governor for setting up the Barrister Sunday Adeniyi led Committee on transportation which assisted a lot in the peaceful change of leadership among the transport unions in the state disclosing that his emergence was however purely on the cooperation and support of the union members and not a political appointment.
The situation in Ogun State has been very worrisome, our rural road are bad, this Governor Abiodun’s led administration has touched many roads all in the three senatorial district, the road in Sango-Otta among others are presently in good conditions while some are ongoing, those fixed roads are always in the favour and interest of we tricycle riders in the state; because we don’t ply express but rural roads, and this has really boost the economy of our IGR to the state government.
When we came on board, our payment to the state government has been increased by the 30% to what what we met before coming on board; part of our activities is to help government to generate its IGR because our association is a consultant to the state government. I have said it on different platforms that tricycles accident in Ogun State is the lowest so far among other unions, you may confirm this from our road security agencies, it’s simply because we are very concern, the welfare of our operators is paramount to us, the dream behind my aspiration is to bring professionalism into the transport unionism in Ogun State.
He stated further that due to the constant training of its members and committed interest in their welfare, tricycle accidents remain the lowest in the state promising that his tenure would be devoted to ensuring prosperity of the owners and riders of tricycle in the state amidst high safety standards.
Agunbiade has therefore solicited for cooperation of all the union members and other stakeholders as he is determined to leave the union far better than he met it.
