More than ever public participation in politics is being emphasized on, currently there are campaigns and efforts put in by well meaning Nigerians to ensure that people know their roles in elections and the importance of their votes.
On the top of that list are the young people. More than before there is a request to be more involved in the electoral process and ultimately be able to decide who gets the chance to sit on the national throne as president.
It is to this end that Nigerians will discuss on the coming general elections and also get ascertain the level of preparedness of the electoral commission for the coming general elections.
The event has been slated for Saturday by 12 noon and it’s to hold at the Shehu Musa Yar’adua centre in Abuja.
The event is themed ‘The Electorates’ and will be hosted by the A-listed Tv host and presenter Ebuka Obi-Uchendu.
It will give Nigerians to engage INEC one on one and get desired answers with insights on what to expect from INEC as an electoral body.
With regards to the event the Executive Director of the electoral college of Nigeria, Kunle Lawal has stated that this kind of events are“necessary to entrench the needed proliteracy of the electorate so we can solidify the gains on this journey to a better governed nation.”
Also looking forward to the event, the Executive Director of Centre for Journalism Innovation and Development (CJID), one of the organisers, Tobi Oluwatola, said the platform will offer another opportunity to foster youth participation in the electoral process.
He noted that “… effective liberal democracy requires the participation of the majority of people but also diverse interests that may not be represented by the majority. As the electoral umpire, INEC has a role to play to ensure expanded participation especially among youth. This platform provides an opportunity to motivate youth participation.”
