Mr Godwin Obaseki of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has won the Edo State governorship election after defeating Mr Osagie Ize-Iyamu, to win a second term as governor of Edo State.
Governor Obaseki who polled the highest number of votes in the keenly-contested poll conducted on Saturday was returned elected by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
He was announced winner of the exercise by the INEC Returning Officer for the poll, Professor Akpofure Rem-Rukeh, on Sunday at the office of the electoral umpire in Benin City.
“That Godwin Obaseki of PDP having satisfied the requirements of the law in meeting the 25 per cent in two-third of the local government areas in the state and having a margin of lead higher than the cancelled votes is hereby declared the winner and returned elected,” Professor Rem-Rukeh stated.
Governor Obaseki polled 307,955 votes, to defeat his closest riva Ize-Iyamu of APC, who got 223, 619 votes.
A total of 14 political parties fielded candidates to jostle for the office of the governor in the state.
Preliminary reports from some electoral observers have held that it was mostly peaceful and largely free and fair.
