Rasmus Højlund continued to prove his worth on the European stage, inspiring Manchester United to a 3-2 triumph over Bodø/Glimt in a dramatic Europa League encounter at Old Trafford. The victory marked Ruben Amorim’s first win as United’s manager, offering a much-needed boost after recent struggles.
Højlund’s contributions were pivotal, as he was directly involved in all three goals, ensuring United progression in the competition.
United wasted no time in making an impact. Within the opening minute, Højlund’s relentless pressing forced an error from goalkeeper Nikita Haikin. Alejandro Garnacho capitalized, scoring into an open net to set the tone for the match. However, Bodø/Glimt, backed by an impressive traveling support that accounted for 12% of their hometown’s population, refused to back down.
The visitors responded with two quick goals. Håkon Evjen leveled the match with a spectacular strike into the top corner, and Philip Zinckernagel outmaneuvered Tyrell Malacia to put Bodø/Glimt ahead. It was a nightmare return for Malacia, who was substituted at halftime after struggling to cope defensively.
Second-Half Spark Secures Victory
United regained their composure before halftime through a moment of brilliance from Højlund. A precise cross from Noussair Mazraoui found the Danish forward, who showcased exceptional technique by controlling the ball with one foot before volleying home with the other.
After the break, United emerged with renewed determination. Højlund struck again in the 50th minute, this time converting a clever pass from Manuel Ugarte. Despite creating several opportunities to extend their lead, including near-misses from Garnacho and substitute Marcus Rashford, United had to endure a tense finish as Bodø/Glimt pushed for an equalizer.
United’s defense had mixed performances. Goalkeeper André Onana had an erratic night, making crucial saves but also committing errors that could have been costly. Mazraoui stood out for his composure and attacking support, while Matthijs de Ligt and Lisandro Martínez struggled at times against the visitors’ pace.
Amorim’s tactical decisions were influential, particularly his halftime adjustments. Diogo Dalot replaced Malacia, stabilizing the left flank, while Amad Diallo’s energy injected dynamism into United’s counter-attacks. Despite these changes, there were signs that the team is still adjusting to Amorim’s system.
This hard-fought victory is a strong indication that Højlund is growing to become an important player for United. His ability to deliver in high-pressure situations has made him a key figure, particularly in European competitions. For Amorim, the win provides a foundation to build on as he seeks to revitalize the squad and implement his vision.
Manchester United’s Europa League journey continues with renewed optimism, as they aim to translate this momentum into domestic success.
