THE Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele, has announced to Nigerians that President Muhammadu Buhari will be unveiling the newly redesigned Naira notes on Wednesday during the weekly Federal Executive Council, at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
Emefiele also added that the newly redesigned notes will be made available for circulation to Nigerians before Thursday, 15th December, 2022.
The CBN boss made this announcement in a press briefing after the Monetary Police Committee meeting in Abuja.
Responding to the needs of redesigning the Nigerian currency, Rakiyat Mohammed, the Director of Information Technology at the CBN, on Tuesday during the Zenith Bank Tech Fair in Lagos disclosed that about thirty-six million Nigerians have zero access to financial services.
During her presentation at the Zenith Bank Tech Fair, which was tagged ‘Future Forward‘, Mohammed noted that CBN was the first Central Bank in Africa to launch a Central Bank Digital Currency (eNaira), and the second in the world.
In her words: “Nigeria has the 6th most advanced retail payment system. This was according to a report by ACI. So, if you look at that report, you will see why.
“Remember, when the president launched eNaira, he did say in the next 10 years, we expected eNaira and its associated technologies to increase our GDP by $20bn. We are working on that.”
