The Minister of Transportation, Mu’azu Sambo, Thursday, inaugurated Nigerian Shippers’ Council Governing Board with the charge to foster a robust, accountable and result-driven economy in line with global best practices.
Sambo while inaugurating the board in Abuja reminded members not to forget that the council is vested with “the responsibility of providing a forum for the protection of the interest of shippers on matters affecting the shipment of imports and exports to and from Nigeria as well as liaising with the appropriate arms of the government of the federation and other organizations in assessing the stability and adequacy of existing services and make appropriate recommendations.”
Sambo expressed confidence in the board members’ ability to use their expertise to promote caution, transparency, accountability, equity, and fairness in the discharge of their responsibilities while also urging them to avoid corruption. He also urged the board to maintain a cordial working relationship with the council’s management.
Dr. Magdalene Ajani, permanent secretary of the Federal Ministry of Transportation, said the following:” You have your roles to support the Nigerian Shippers’ Council, but you are not part of the day to day running of the council.
At some later date, we will be having a retreat where your roles will be clearly spelt out. We are planning to do it with all our boards so that we avoid conflicts. It has become important for me to stress this at every board inauguration for agencies of the Ministry of Transportation to avoid stress.”
In his brief remarks, Lawal Sama’aila Abdullahi, the chairman of the newly formed board, thanked the federal government for the chance and promised that the board will fulfill its mission.
Other board members include Emmanuel Jime, who also serves as the Executive Secretary of the Nigerian Shippers’ Council, Usen Udoh, Oluseyin Oduntan, Violet Williams, and Mohammed Kam-Salem.
