The Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) has suspended two pastors amidst allegations of homosexual activity. RCCG, which is one of the largest Christian institutions in Nigeria, announced this decision following accusations against Pastor Ayorinde AdeBello and Deacon Oke Mayowa.
The RCCG has launched an investigation to thoroughly address these homosexuality allegations, with church authorities stating that this probe will be carried out with care and integrity, and in accordance with the values of the church.
Pastor Sunday Akande, RCCG’s national overseer, confirmed these developments in a letter addressed to the special assistant to the general overseer on administration. He emphasized that the investigation will ensure that church doctrines are upheld in line with biblical teachings and the RCCG’s mission.
Pastor Akande cited a popular biblical verse to backup the church value and stance on the matter: “As you are aware, the doctrine of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) does not allow or tolerate any act of homosexuality.” He also referenced Leviticus 18:22, which is widely interpreted within conservative Christian circles as a prohibition against homosexual activity.
The allegations surfaced on Monday, October 28th, when church authorities reportedly received “serious allegations of homosexuality made against Pastor Ayorinde AdeBello and Deacon Oke Mayowa.” In response, RCCG took swift action to suspend the pastors from their duties and to initiate an investigation expected to conclude within two weeks.
Insight of RCCG’s Stance on Homosexuality
The RCCG is known for its strict adherence to biblical teachings, and Pastor Akande’s statement underscores the church’s traditional interpretation of scripture. In his official communication, he explained, “In accordance with our mission’s commitment to upholding the teachings of the Bible, we must address these allegations with the utmost seriousness it deserves.” Pastor Akande’s reference to RCCG’s values and mission points to the church’s commitment to principles that, according to church officials, form the foundation of their faith and organizational policies.
The letter from the national overseer, titled Investigation and Suspension Regarding Allegations of Homosexuality, outlined the directive for AdeBello, Mayowa, and any other involved individuals to temporarily “relieve themselves from all responsibilities” within the church while the investigation proceeds. Church officials expressed a commitment to transparency and adherence to RCCG’s doctrinal guidelines. “The probe will be handled ‘with care and integrity,’ and it is intended to be concluded within two weeks,” stated an RCCG spokesperson.
How The Incident Impact RCCG Leadership and Congregation
The RCCG, founded by Pa Josiah Akindayomi in 1952 and now overseen by Pastor Enoch Adeboye, has a far-reaching influence in Nigeria and beyond. Known for promoting conservative values, the church’s stance on homosexuality aligns with its teachings on biblical morality. This recent decision to suspend two pastors has reportedly prompted various reactions within the church community and the larger Nigerian society.
For some members, RCCG’s swift response is seen as necessary to maintain the church’s moral and doctrinal standards. “As a congregation, we trust in the church’s leadership to take action when necessary, especially when issues arise that could affect our mission and integrity,” shared a church member in an interview. Others view this case as an important test of the church’s transparency, accountability, and commitment to justice within its ranks. The church has consistently advocated for strict moral standards among its leaders and congregation, making it imperative to address any accusations with a thorough and unbiased approach.
The RCCG’s decision to act upon these allegations reflects its overarching commitment to maintaining a reputable and spiritually driven organization.
