The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) on Wednesday issued a 14-day warning strike ultimatum to the Federal Government to address and resolve issues that have lingered since 2009.
This ultimatum was made known in a statement issued by the National President of ASUU, Professor Emmanuel Osodeke on Wednesday.
The statement which addressed some of the unresolved issues read “In view of the foregoing, ASUU resolves to give the Nigerian Government another 14 days, in addition to the earlier 21 days, beginning from Monday, September 23, 2024, during which all the lingering issues must have been concretely addressed to the satisfaction of the membership of the union.“
The union should not be held responsible for any industrial disharmony that arises from the government’s failure to seize the new opportunity offered by ASUU to nip the looming crisis in the bud.”
Some of the demand of the Union include the payment of salaries of its staff who are on sabbatical and part-time. ASUU also demanded for funds for the revitalisation of federal universities and the release of funds for the payment of Earned Academic Allowances which was included in the 2023 Budget of the Federal Government.
The union also demanded for that the University Transparency and Accountability Solution (UTAS) should be used as a replacement for IPPIS.
